“Inconvenient but necessary” sums up how many specialists view recertification in non-destructive testing (NDT). It can feel inconvenient because, after many years of professional experience, few people want to sit another examination.

Nevertheless, it is necessary for two reasons. First, certification expires if it is not renewed or recertified within the required timeframe. In that case, a complete new qualification examination would be required. Second, regular assessments help safeguard quality and competence, particularly in safety-critical areas of industry.

The difference between renewal and recertification

DIN EN ISO 9712 distinguishes between renewal and recertification. Renewal generally takes place after five years. It checks whether the certified person is still actively working in the relevant inspection method and meets the necessary requirements. A further practical or theoretical examination is usually not required.

Recertification typically takes place after ten years. Technical competence must be demonstrated again, usually through a practical examination or other defined evidence in accordance with the standard. These regular steps ensure that NDT personnel maintain up-to-date knowledge and sufficient practical experience.
