New service: precise cuts with waterjet cutting
8. January 2015
Waterjet cutting is one of the services we offer even without a major order associated with an expert report assignment.
The accredited testing laboratory at W.S. Werkstoff Service GmbH has a modern waterjet cutting system. Waterjet cutting is not just part of our laboratory infrastructure: the system is also available as a stand-alone service, even when it is not part of a major expert report assignment.
We regularly use the waterjet cutting system in our day-to-day laboratory work, for example to produce standard-compliant tensile specimens from various materials for our testing and expert assessment work. We also cut suitable specimens from large components for subsequent preparation and examination in the laboratory.
Why waterjet cutting – would a saw not do?
Waterjet cutting offers physical advantages that other cutting and separation methods cannot achieve. It does not thermally affect the material or cause mechanical deformation at the cut edges.
This is particularly important for sensitive materials and specimens used in materials testing. The material properties remain unchanged and, in many cases, no additional finishing steps are needed.
The system’s software-based control provides another advantage: components can be arranged optimally on the raw material. This reduces offcuts and ensures efficient use of material.
Speed and material versatility as key advantages
As an accredited testing laboratory, we work with industry’s high quality requirements every day. Our waterjet cutting system offers corresponding capabilities. Cutting speeds of up to five metres per minute allow even large quantities to be processed quickly, with consistently high quality and minimal offcuts. Accuracies of up to 0.03 mm can be achieved. Internal contours and complex geometries are also no problem for the system.
Another key advantage is the exceptionally wide range of materials that can be processed. Waterjets can cut titanium, wood and composites, as well as metals including high-strength steels. This makes the method suitable both for traditional materials used in the metal industry and for modern material systems.
Waterjet cutting as an external service
The system can cut almost any 2D contour to individual specifications economically and precisely. We can therefore help with short-notice one-off jobs or carry out regular cutting work as part of external projects. We also support companies that need DIN-compliant tensile specimens or wish to outsource conventional waterjet cutting, whether for one-off projects or regular cutting orders.
The system can import designs in almost all common vector formats, including SVG, DXF and DWG. On request, we also help customers convert or prepare their data. Another advantage is that the system stores designs in a so-called CUT archive. This eliminates the need to repeat the setup work for recurring orders.
The key advantages of waterjet cutting at a glance:
- no thermal effect on the material
- no mechanical deformation at the cut edges
- in many cases, no finishing is required
- short processing times
- a wide variety of materials
- minimal offcuts through optimised positioning
- material thicknesses from 0.05 to 200 mm are possible
- accuracies of up to 0.03 mm
