Eddy current testing (ET)

Testing methods in materials testing (NDT)

Detecting material defects electromagnetically

Eddy current testing (ET) uses electromagnetic induction: an alternating-current test coil generates eddy currents in the electrically conductive component. Cracks, changes in the material or differences in coating thickness cause measurable disturbances in the eddy current field.

The method is particularly suitable for rapid series testing of pipes, wires, bars and sheets, as well as for detecting surface cracks and measuring coating thickness.

We use eddy current testing in accordance with EN ISO 15548 and application-specific standards.

How does eddy current testing (ET) work?

In eddy current testing, W.S. Werkstoff Service examines electrically conductive components non-destructively using electromagnetic induction. An alternating-current test coil generates eddy currents in the material. When these encounter cracks, material changes, microstructural differences or variations in coating thickness, the electromagnetic field changes measurably. These signals are recorded and evaluated by the testing instrument and associated with the corresponding anomalies. The method is particularly suitable for rapid series testing of pipes, wires, bars and sheets, as well as for detecting surface cracks. The results are then documented in accordance with the applicable standards.
