Detecting cracks in ferromagnetic materials

Magnetic particle testing (MT) is a reliable method for detecting surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic materials. The component is magnetised, producing leakage fields at defects that attract fine magnetic particles visible under UV light.

Typical applications include welds, forgings, castings and rolling bearing components. The method is fast, cost-effective and also suitable for complex component geometries.

We offer MT testing in accordance with EN ISO 17638 – using stationary magnetising equipment in our laboratory and mobile equipment for use in your production facility or on construction sites.

How does magnetic particle testing (MT) work?

In magnetic particle testing, W.S. Werkstoff Service examines ferromagnetic components non-destructively for cracks and near-surface irregularities. First, the component is cleaned to ensure reliable testing. Depending on its geometry and the testing task, the test piece is then magnetised using a coil, a yoke or a current passed through it. Cracks produce leakage fields that attract the applied magnetic particles. The powder is applied dry or as a suspension and makes defects visible; fluorescent testing products are viewed under UV light. The indications are evaluated and documented in accordance with the applicable standards. Finally, the component can be professionally demagnetised.
