Reliably revealing surface cracks

Penetrant testing (PT) is an established non-destructive method for detecting surface cracks and surface-breaking defects. A coloured or fluorescent penetrant is applied to the cleaned surface of the component. It penetrates fine cracks and is made visible after a dwell time.

The method is suitable for almost all non-porous materials, such as steels, aluminium, titanium or ceramics, and is used for weld evaluation, repair inspections and series production monitoring.

We carry out penetrant testing in accordance with EN ISO 3452, both in our laboratory and directly at customers’ premises.

How does penetrant testing (PT) work?

In penetrant testing, W.S. Werkstoff Service examines components non-destructively for surface-breaking defects such as cracks or pores. First, the surface is thoroughly cleaned so that dirt, oil or residues do not affect the results. A red or fluorescent penetrant is then applied and enters any defects present. After excess penetrant is removed, a developer is applied to draw the penetrant out of the defects and make it visible on the surface. The indications are evaluated visually or under UV light. Finally, the component is cleaned and the test results are documented in accordance with the applicable standards.
