Examining internal defects with ultrasonic imaging

Phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) is a powerful development of conventional ultrasonic testing (UT).

By electronically controlling multiple transducer elements, ultrasonic beams can be steered, focused and displayed as real-time images without mechanically reconfiguring the probe.

PAUT is used to inspect welds(opens in new tab), forgings, cast components and complex geometries in industries such as energy, chemicals, aviation and mechanical engineering.

W.S. Werkstoff Service carries out phased array ultrasonic testing using state-of-the-art equipment – both in the laboratory and on site with mobile equipment.

How does phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) work?

In phased array ultrasonic testing, W.S. Werkstoff Service examines components non-destructively using electronically controlled ultrasonic waves. A probe with multiple transducer elements directs sound beams into the material. These can be steered, focused and adapted to the testing task without mechanically reconfiguring the probe. Reflections from cracks, lack of fusion or other irregularities are recorded and displayed as images. This allows precise assessment of welds, forgings, cast components and complex geometries. The results are evaluated and documented in a traceable manner.
