Measuring residual stresses non-destructively

Residual stresses affect the service life, failure behaviour and dimensional stability of components but are invisible to the naked eye. Ultrasound-based residual stress measurement detects these stress states non-destructively. The method is particularly suitable for welds, machined surfaces and quality assurance after heat treatment or forming processes.

We offer mobile residual stress measurements directly on the component or in production – without sampling and without destruction.

Good to know: W.S. Werkstoff Service has developed its own residual stress measurement method, ResiduStress.

How does residual stress measurement using ultrasound work?

In residual stress measurement using ultrasound, W.S. Werkstoff Service measures stress states in components non-destructively. Ultrasonic waves are coupled into the material. Residual stresses affect the propagation velocity of the sound waves, producing measurable changes in transit time. These signals are recorded, evaluated and compared with reference or calibration data. This provides information about tensile or compressive residual stresses. The method is suitable for welds, machined surfaces and components after heat treatment or forming. The results are documented.
