Detecting internal defects using ultrasound

In ultrasonic testing (UT), high-frequency sound waves are coupled into the component. Reflections produced at internal interfaces, such as cracks, pores or lack of fusion, are received and evaluated. The method provides information about the location, size and type of internal defects.

UT is used on welds, pipes, plates, forgings and pressure vessel components. Our equipment includes conventional probes and phased array systems (PAUT).

How does ultrasonic testing (UT) work?

In ultrasonic testing, W.S. Werkstoff Service examines components non-destructively using high-frequency sound waves. A probe transmits ultrasonic pulses into the material, where they propagate at a sound velocity determined by the material. When the waves encounter interfaces, cracks, shrinkage cavities or other irregularities, they are reflected and detected by the testing instrument. The transit time, signal strength and position of the indications provide information about internal defects and wall thicknesses. The appropriate frequency is selected according to the material, component thickness and testing task. Finally, the measurement results are evaluated and documented in accordance with the applicable standards.
