Systematic visual inspection of surfaces

Visual testing is the most basic and, at the same time, an indispensable testing method. Surfaces are systematically examined for cracks, corrosion, deformation, damage or manufacturing defects – with the naked eye or using optical instruments such as magnifying glasses, endoscopes and camera systems.

VT is used both as a stand-alone inspection and as a preliminary stage before any further NDT, for example during acceptance inspections of welds, vessels or structural steelwork.

Our examiners qualified in accordance with EN ISO 9712 carry out visual inspections in accordance with EN ISO 17637 and other standards.

How does visual testing (VT) work?

In visual testing, W.S. Werkstoff Service examines components for visible surface defects. First, the inspection surface is cleaned and exposed so that the relevant areas can be assessed reliably. Suitable lighting is then provided. Inspection is carried out directly with the eye or using aids such as a magnifying glass, mirror, endoscope or videoscope. Hard-to-reach areas can be inspected indirectly. Anomalies such as cracks, deformation, corrosion, weld defects or surface irregularities are assessed. The results are then documented in writing or with photographs and provided for quality assurance, release decisions or decisions on further testing.
