Testing toughness under impact loading

The Charpy impact test assesses a material’s toughness under impact loading. A pendulum hammer breaks a notched sample, and the absorbed energy in joules provides a measure of its notch impact toughness. This method is crucial for acceptance testing of steels used in pressure vessel construction, shipbuilding, offshore applications and wherever resistance to brittle fracture is required.

We carry out Charpy impact tests in accordance with EN ISO 148-1, including low-temperature testing down to −196 °C (liquid nitrogen).

How does the Charpy impact test work?

In the Charpy impact test, W.S. Werkstoff Service tests a material's impact toughness using a sample prepared in accordance with the relevant standard. The sample is manufactured in accordance with DIN EN ISO 148-1 and provided with a V-notch. During the test, a pendulum hammer strikes the notched sample at the lowest point of its swing and breaks it. The energy consumed is recorded as the absorbed impact energy in joules. The measurements provide information on susceptibility to brittle fracture, toughness and temperature-dependent behaviour. By precisely controlling sample temperatures, the transition temperature can also be determined. Finally, the results are documented in a traceable manner.
