Measuring resistance to indentation

Hardness testing determines a material’s resistance to penetration by a specified indenter. Methods such as Vickers (HV), Brinell (HBW) and Rockwell (HR) provide characteristic values that correlate closely with strength and wear resistance.

Possible applications include checking heat treatment results, determining hardness profiles across welds (macro- and microhardness), assessing carburisation and general material acceptance testing.

We carry out testing in accordance with DIN EN ISO 6508, 6507, 6506 and other standards, both in our accredited laboratory and on site using mobile equipment.

How does hardness testing (HT) work?

W.S. Werkstoff Service carries out hardness testing in a structured manner tailored to the component. First, the test surface is cleaned and prepared as required by the method. The appropriate testing method is then selected, for example Vickers, Brinell or UCI. A specified indenter is pressed into the surface with a defined force. Depending on the method, the resulting indentation, its diagonals, indentation diameter or a measurement signal are then evaluated. The hardness value is calculated from these data and documented in a traceable manner. This produces reliable test results for quality assurance, production or maintenance.
