Revealing material microstructures

Metallographic examinations reveal a material’s microstructure. Samples taken from the component are mounted, ground, polished and etched (prepared), then analysed under a light microscope. The microstructural characteristics, grain size, phase distribution, heat treatment condition and weld microstructure are assessed, along with damage such as corrosion, cracks or overheating.

We offer complete metallographic analyses, from sampling and specimen preparation through to photomicrographic documentation and written reporting of findings. We also support you with damage analyses, material acceptance testing and process optimisation.

How does metallography work?

In a metallographic examination, W.S. Werkstoff Service first takes a sample from the component. The sample is then prepared by grinding, polishing and etching to reveal the material's internal microstructure. Microstructure types, grain sizes, layer thicknesses and other characteristics are analysed under a microscope. Digital image analysis allows structures, distributions and sizes to be determined precisely, for example graphite morphologies in cast iron. The results are evaluated, documented and provided in a digital test report. Metallographic examination therefore supplies important information about material quality, processing and component properties.
