Optical emission spectrometry determines elemental composition

Chemical analysis identifies a material’s elemental composition and thus provides the basis for its verification. Methods such as optical emission spectrometry (OES) provide fast, precise verification of the complete alloy composition. Possible applications include positive material identification (PMI), acceptance testing against standards or specifications, damage investigation and quality assurance in production and purchasing.

Using mobile equipment, we can test directly on the component or within the supply chain without having to send samples to a laboratory. Laboratory analyses also enable the determination of trace elements and non-metals such as carbon, sulphur and nitrogen in accordance with the relevant standards.

How does spectral analysis work?

In chemical analysis using spectral analysis, W.S. Werkstoff Service examines a material's elemental composition. In OES analysis, an electrical discharge excites and partially vaporises a small area of the sample surface. The resulting plasma emits characteristic light signals from the alloying elements present. The spectrometer separates these into individual wavelengths and evaluates their intensity. This allows the percentage composition of the elements to be determined. XRF can also be used as a complementary method for suitable analytical questions. The results are documented digitally and provided in a test report.
