Testing materials under tensile loading

The tensile test is the principal method for determining mechanical and technological properties. It measures yield strength, tensile strength, elongation after fracture and reduction of area on specified samples under uniaxial tensile loading.

The method is an integral part of material acceptance testing for steels, aluminium and many other metals and is based on standards, manufacturer specifications or customer requirements.

In our laboratory, we carry out testing in accordance with EN ISO 6892-1 (metallic materials at room temperature) and EN ISO 6892-2 (elevated temperatures).

How does the tensile test work?

W.S. Werkstoff Service carries out tensile testing on a standardised sample to determine a material's mechanical load-bearing capacity. The sample is first manufactured, measured and prepared in accordance with the relevant standard. It is then precisely clamped and aligned in the tensile testing machine. During testing, the sample is stretched at a defined rate until it fractures. Force and change in length are recorded continuously. The measurement data produce a stress-strain diagram from which key properties such as tensile strength, yield strength and elongation after fracture are derived. Finally, the results are documented in a test report that complies with the relevant standard.
