Training or many years of experience in a metalworking occupation is an ideal, but not essential, prerequisite for taking part in a qualification or vocational retraining programme to become a materials testing technician (IHK) or a material testing specialist (systems technology or metals technology). Far more important are a general interest in technical matters, basic knowledge of mathematics and physics, enjoyment of working with metal, a conscientious approach and a sense of order.
